Final Analysis

The culmination of Super Rugby 2017 takes place tomorrow afternoon in Johannesburg.

Fittingly the top two sides after the regular season will meet to play off for the trophy.

The Lions have home advantage, courtesy of playing well and the flawed structure of the tournament.

I have made no secret of my dislike for the format and hope that next season the fixture lists are

more balanced. The Crusaders have had a much tougher season, have had to travel and

will likely struggle with the thin air at altitude – particularly in the last quarter.

History does not favour the New Zealand franchise – I think only once has the away team won.

They will draw some comfort in that that away team was the Crusaders.

I still find it hard to understand why the final of such a prestigious tournament is not played at a

National stadium rather than a home ground.

Still, it is what it is!

Around half of the two squads will be playing each other again in the Rugby Championship

which starts in a couple of weeks – those left standing anyway.

I hope the Crusaders grind out a win, but expect it to be very close.

Incidentally, if you’re looking to record the game you’ll need to go to Sky Sports Mix – which is on 121 not in the Sports section.
