Justice was served in Canberra this morning with the Hurricanes deservedly running out winners 16-35 against the Brumbies.
Last week the Hurricanes needed to beat the Crusaders to prevent them having to go to SA to face the Stormers – it was a tough match against the previously unbeaten Christchurch team. By contrast the Brumbies had already secured a home quarter final, courtesy of the stupid format – so they rested their players in readiness for today’s game.
In the first half it looked like it might have worked – they raced into a 13-5 lead and were ahead at halftime by 16-15.
The second half belonged to the NZ outfit however who claimed a territorial advantage of around 80%.
The Hurricanes will take some stopping – even if they end up having to play the Lions in Johannesburg. Ardie Savea made more yards than anyone on the pitch, Jordie Barrett will surely be kicking for the All Blacks in the Rugby Championship and Dane Coles showed why, after 4 months out with injury, he is the best hooker on the planet. Coles break and offload made the try for TJ that sealed the game – he is certain to take back the number 2 AB jersey next month.
The Brumbies have had a poor season – which should have finished last week.
Their only consolation was the sight of Christian Lealiifano back on the pitch having recovered from cancer.
