I was wrong yesterday when I said that the NZ media would find excuses for the All Blacks loss in Wellington.
They were in fact as generous as both Steve Hansen and Kieran Read in their acceptance that the Lions were better on the day – and I apologise for that error in pre –judgement.
With one exception they all agreed that the red card for SBW was absolutely right and with some justification wondered if Mako Vunipola wasn’t a bit lucky.
The one that was laughable was this –
Some could argue that with Waisake Naholo holding Anthony Watson the situation was close enough to a maul, and that what Williams did was tantamount to the clearing out which is now part of the game.
I doubt it was meant to be taken seriously – I mean how could you ffs?
The All Black fans however didn’t see the game the same way – here are some of the more printable comments –
#NZLvBIL don’t know what BIL fans are so chuffed about, that match was won by the ref who wouldn’t listen to his TMO.
Spare a thought for Jerome Garces who’s not going home after this, he’s the touch judge at Eden Park next wk. It’ll be a long wk in Auckland
Aussie ref next week please #NZLvBIL
If they don’t like a ref who pings the Lions 13 times I have no idea who they would be happy with!
The All Black team and their management deserve a better class of fan. They are by some distance the best team on the planet but they are not totally invincible!
There I was thinking that the Lions won the second test, but it seems we only scored more points – better luck next week eh?
