Yesterday I said that the Red Roses would beat Australia and that the Hurricanes would just about knock over the Chiefs.
I was half right – as the Red Roses duly came away with an impressive win by 53-10 – I had them to be ahead by only 26
Wing Sarah McKenna scored a hat-trick of tries while Izzy Noel-Smith, Abbie Scott, Kay Wilson (two), Vicky Fleetwood and Harriet Millar-Mills also went over, with Emily Scott adding four conversions.
Australia’s captain Ashleigh Hewson scored a try and a penalty with fly half Fenella Hake adding a conversion
On the minus side the Chiefs pulled off a good win to complete a double over the Hurricanes by 14-17 (I had the Canes by 7 – wrongly!)
It was a hell of a game (thanks to Sky!) with a shedload of the All Black squad on the field. It was a hard fought game and at the death only a Damien McKenzie penalty separated the sides – both of whom scored two converted tries.
The result means that the Crusaders will finish top of the NZ conference (as if there was much doubt) and the chiefs and the Hurricanes are only separated by one point with one round to go (after the Lions tour).
The Brumbies won’t be looking forward to playing either of them in the quarters.
