It’s the semi-finals of the Aviva Premiership on Saturday and I am a bit stuck over one of my predictions.
I have long been a fan of Exeter Chiefs (pretty much everyone’s second favourite team). Rob Baxter has done a brilliant job – surviving and thriving whilst most of the sides promoted from the Championship have struggled. Many of them disappearing after finding the Premiership a really tough place to survive.
The Chiefs came second in the regular season and for 10 minutes looked like they may be top. This after a poor start to 2016/7.
Their remarkable run in saw a 9 game winning streak – each one with a try bonus point.
You’d think they’d be a shoe-in to make the final wouldn’t you?
That is until you see they play Saracens.
If Saracens had lost the final last week in Edinburgh – and it was still very much in the balance with 10 to go – I think they would have found it hard to raise themselves in just 7 days.
But Saracens did win and underlined why they are the best team in Europe.
The Chiefs have had the benefit of an extra weeks rest and are at fortress Sandy Park – but I still think that Saracens will have just enough to get them into the final – but not by more than about 13 and possibly a lot less.
It would be hard on the Chiefs but their time will come.
In the other semi Wasps entertain the Tigers at the Ricoh.
Apart from the odd blip Wasps have been the form side in the Premiership and I think they will blow Leicester away by more than 20 at the death.
I’m getting a semi just thinking about two big games and an afternoon on the sofa!
