A Lions tour is probably the peak of a rugby career for a home countries player – especially one to New Zealand to take on the World Champions.
There has been much media speculation and concern regarding the injuries to both squads as the tour nears.
However the first withdrawal from the Lion’s squad had nothing to do with concussion or a knee injury – it was something far more serious – terminal cancer. Not for a player but for one of his family.
Last night Ben Youngs withdrew because of the terrible diagnosis to his brother’s young wife –
It is impossible not to feel for the whole family and the rugby word will respect Ben’s decision and the man himself.
Greg Laidlaw will replace Ben in the squad – it’s not the way he would have wanted to become a Lion.
The rugby family will be thinking and praying for the Young family over the coming days and months.
