Flying Start

Super Rugby started yesterday and three games have been completed –

Rebels 18 Blues 56

Highlanders 15 Chiefs 24

Reds 28 Sharks 26

The all NZ match up featured two sides who made the semi-finals in 2016 and it was a close affair with a lot of skill on show.

The Chiefs scored a try from a neat set piece at the line-out – not as smart as the Scotland try against Ireland – but just as effective –

Another blow for the Highlanders was the sight of Ben Smith unconscious on the pitch after a mid-air clash with another All Black, Damien McKenzie –

Smith went off for a concussion assessment and didn’t return – hopefully he is okay.

There are a lot more games on Saturday – early morning in the UK – and covered by Sky Sports. The first is at 4.15 am with the 2016 champions, the Hurricanes away to the Sunwolves. Suggest you use the record button! –

The format continues to be controversial even on day one with former Australian Rugby Boss, John O’Neill suggesting that the competition should dump the Jaguares, Sunwolves and the sixth South African franchise –

O’Neill argues the Super Rugby should return to 15 teams, followed by a dialogue with New Zealand Rugby Union about a trans-Tasman comp.

I think he has a point!
