Rather inevitably the game of rugby has changed since it went fully professional back in the late 90’s.
Much of the development has been positive, but there is at least one worrying trend that is starting (albeit slowly) to mirror how professional football operates.
I refer to the sometimes knee jerk reaction of the board in junking the manager in response to pressure from fans, media, players or a combination of all three.
We are just over halfway through the Premiership season and already 2 head coaches, Andy Robinson and Richard Cockerill have been dumped – plus others to go are defence coach Scott Hansen (also from the Tigers) and Alex king, backs coach at Saints. There have also been suggestions that even Jim Mallinder is under pressure.
I accept that being a pro game there is a results culture but it will be a sad day if there are no allowances made – for instance Tigers have had a fair few injury problems recently with Manu, Mathew Tait, JP Pietersen, Matt Toomua and Telusa Veainu all crocked.
Richard Cockerill isn’t to everyone’s taste but he hasn’t got a bad record –
And Tigers are still 5th in the table. So there are 7 teams lower – does that mean there are 7 more coaches under threat?
