Ddiwrnod Trist (Sad Day)

It is sadly ironic that whilst everyone is getting excited about next year’s tour to New Zealand that London Welsh have gone into liquidation.

The 1971 squad were the first (and only) British and Irish Lions side to win a series against the All Blacks – in 11 attempts.

On that tour just 33 players were used for the 26 matches – and 7 of those were from the London Welsh club, including the captain, John Dawes.

I’m pretty sure that is the most from any one club on a Lions tour.

The club were actually in the Premiership in 2014/15 before being relegated only 18 months ago.

Whilst there have been many advantages from the professional era, there have also been casualties.
