Wasps have been criticised in the press and social media for recruiting world class players to an already pretty stellar squad. The inference has been that, with so much quality available some of them will find it hard to get a regular game. One comparison was even to the Chelsea of a few years ago that added star players just to stop other clubs getting them.
Dai Young hit back this week by referencing another football manager –
“Arsene Wenger told his squad, if you want to play every week, go and play for Derby,” Young says. “We want a strong squad, so that’s how it is, and I don’t see it as being my job to keep everyone happy”
It will be an interesting situation when Kurtley Beale is fit and Willie le Roux arrives.
However, with international calls and the inevitable injuries it looks like Dai has got his options well covered. The comparison with Chelsea was particularly weak – injuries are fewer and less serious and the football premiership stops for internationals – I think envy of the squad was the motivation for that one.
Wasps look a particularly serious outfit this season and the strength of the squad is only likely to help when chasing the Premiership crown and European glory.
Good luck to them.
